Does acupuncture hurt?

Although acupuncture involves the insertion of filiform needles, there is often no sensation when the needle is inserted. The practice of Japanese Acupuncture uses the smallest and most narrow needles with very little, if any, stimulation. This is very different from the Chinese based techniques which often creates a rushing sensation at the site of the needle.

When Trigger Point Dry Needling techniques are used, there is a stronger sensation at the area of the needle, however, the relief of pain and discomfort from the muscular or structural issue far exceeds any temporary discomfort.

Before any acupuncture begins, we will inform you of what to expect. You should not experience any burning, stinging or otherwise uncomfortable sensations. During or after the treatment, you might feel things inexplicably moving, or feel some areas becoming heavy while some areas are becoming lighter. Most commonly, clients have a great night of sleep while their bodies integrate and begin the healing process.

How do I know if acupuncture is for me?

Acupuncture has been used in various forms for thousands of years in many countries for a wide variety of conditions. In fact, East Asian medicine became a formalized system of health for preventive care, not just as a means to fight disease.

  • If you are currently seeking a course of treatment to manage your symptoms, we want to help you treat the cause.
  • If you are worried that “something just doesn’t feel right,” we want to help you understand the interconnectedness of your body, and treat it.
  • If you are concerned that your stress level is causing other problems, we want to stregnthen your body AND help you ease the stress.
  • If you have tried other therapeutic modalities and have not had success, we want to help you to find your path to return to your true self.

What makes AXIOM unique?

AXIOM is unique in its approach to create change before the needle is inserted. We test the efficacy of an intended treatment to ensure that you feel the change and know it is working. Then the treatments accumulate as we ‘peel the onion’ of your condition. Generally speaking, each patient will feel a meaningful change within three to five treatments. Please call us to discuss your specific circumstances so we can provide you with a more meaningful level of expectation.

How long is each treatment?

The initial consultation to review your complete medical history can take between 15 and 30 minutes. We do not charge for your medical history intake as this in our investment in you. The initial treatment is approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Subsequent appointments are approximately one hour and 15 minutes. However, if you have less availability, Stephen will work with you to have a complete treatment in your timeframe.

In contrast to many types of acupuncture that have you to lay on the table for most of the session resting with needles, Stephen’s actively works with you for most of the session while still enabling you to rest. Simply, Stephen spends more of his time with you than most practitioners as part of his way to ensure that you both know the treatment is working.

How many times do I need to be treated?

There is a general rule: the more acute your condition, the less you need to be treated. The more chronic the condition, the more that is required. However, each person is different and like all rules, there are exceptions. However, at AXIOM we want you to achieve your goals as efficiently as possible. We can reach more people through your satisfied referrals than by trying to string clients along.

Is it possible to have a home visit?

Our number one goal is to accommodate you. If you are unable to come to our office, please call us so we can make special arrangements.
